Not for sensitive readers: Flesh and Blood, the sequel to the bestselling Blood Sisters

Flesh and bloodVlees en bloedPresenting Flesh and Blood – the true story of two sisters with the day job of cleaning up crime scenes, by Riette Rust, with Eileen de Jager and Roelien Schutte:

Flesh and Blood is the sequel to the bestseller Blood Sisters (2012) and is also available in Afrikaans as Vlees en bloed.

When Handy Andy is just not enough

“But you are women!” This is something the Blood Sisters often hear.

Eileen and Roelien are not known as the Blood Sisters merely because they are siblings, they clean up bloody crime scenes as part of their day job.

In the last 15 years, they have worked on about 7 000 scenes where suicides, homicides, torture, assault, farm attacks and natural deaths had occurred.

“Many people start similar businesses, but they never last.” This too was a phrase the sisters frequently heard at the beginning, yet today their business, Crime Scene Clean-up, is flourishing and they have never had a dissatisfied client.

Sometimes the sisters clean up hoarders’ homes, often packed to the ceiling with junk; at other times they help to restore damage caused by fire or floods. One of the most bizarre cases they have had to deal with was a man who had horded used toilet paper for many years.

“Do you really think you can clean up bloody scenes like these?”

Flesh and Blood tells stories that go beyond blood and gore. The reader is invited into the world of the Blood Sisters: we experience everything from the extreme health hazards and physical challenges posed by the cleaning processes, to the restless souls they encounter at murder scenes and the post-traumatic stress and emotional toll that their work inevitably takes on them.

Fascinating, written with great detail, compassion and humour.
